The 1990’s

 

1989 - 1990

The decade started with a new captain coach by the name of Stephen Walter. Stephen brought a new approach to the club and quickly had our 1XI back into the grand final. The 1XI were runner up, the 4XI and 5XI lost the semis and the 3XI lead by Daniel Evans won the premiership. Ray Irving had a stellar year taking 46 wickets for the season. Although the year disappointing it built the platform for the Basin Cricket Club to be feared once again.

 

1990 - 1991

A second year with Stephen Walter at the helm and another step closer to gaining the elusive premiership. The 1XI once again came runners up. Mark Posch took out the association batting average with 441 runs at an average of 44.1.

 

1991 - 1992

The Basin Cricket Club sadly lost a friend in Phil “Lucky” Johnstone. Phil was president at the time and his tireless work seasons prior help mould the club into what we see today. Not only was he a clubman but a great leader on and off the field. Stephen Walter’s third year in charge of the club, we missed out on the finals but Stephen gave everything he had to lead the way. Stephen took out the 1XI batting average that year. This was the end of the Walter era as captain.

 

1992 - 1993

A lost year due to wash out saw the 1XI only play six games for the season. Season highlight was Paul ‘Mac’ Stewarts magnificent 110 from 145 balls against Upwey to ensure a victory for the Basin. The best individual bowling performance was Ray ‘Horse ‘ Irving decimating a talented Upwey with a spell of 6/45 off 15.4 overs.

 

1993 - 1994

Steve ‘Sooty’ Roberts takes over at the helm of the club. The 1XI make the semis and won in a very exciting finish. The grand final was a different story and although the luck didn’t go our way the team did the club proud and fought hard until the end. The highlights were Andrew Freemans 8/24 against Upper Gully and his 110 against Mountain Gate showing his abilities as an all rounder. The same season Chris Baxter made 138 and Rick Turcinovic made 146.

 

1994 - 1995

Four out of five teams made the finals along with the veterans who came runners up. The 2XI won the premiership under the leadership of Mark ‘Daisy’ Day. Peter ‘Bubba’ Gardner was appointed as Chairman of selectors and gave the club more direction with both his on field and off field roles. John Kilby once again hit the 400 run mark including make a ton. Peter Gardner also hit the 400 mark for the season with a high score of 153*. With the bowling it was Paul Cornell taking 38 wickets with an average of 16.125 for the season.

 

1996 - 1997

David Brodtman took over the captaincy and in came the year that will forever go down as our most successful year as a club with the bat. We had18 hundreds hit for the season throughout the grades and while it was a disappointing year to lose both the 1XI and 2XI in the semi finals, our 3XI went on to win the premiership. David Lambert and Corey Brodtmann won both the club and association batting and bowling averages. Dave also hit a club record with 703 runs for the season. Keith “Tuddy” Glover also hit our record of 232 runs in an innings the same game that we broke and still hold the record for most runs in a season 8/1258 - Topline Shield 3.

 

1997 - 1998

The Basin youth began to rise as we lost a few of the experienced players this season. Jamie Coates consistent batting performances paved the way with his 400 run season and Leigh James started his rise with a bowling average and 20 wickets.

 

1998 - 1999

We started off the year with a Jamie Coates hatrick and a very convincing win. Unfortunately our next win wasn’t until the last game against Knoxfield who went on to play in the grand final. While not winning many games we were competitive in most of the games. Jamie Coates having an outstanding year winning both the bowling and the batting averages for the year.
